# AC313 - 06/06/1966 USA, Gemini Rendezvous Mission GTA 9
Cover Commemorates Recover Force for Gemini 9 Spacecraft
On June 3, 1966, the Gemini 9 mission was launched with two astronauts inside the spacecraft. The objectives were to rendezvous with another spacecraft while in space and to perform extravehicular activities (EVA or space walk). The rendezvous had to be modified when the first target vehicle exploded after takeoff, and another one was launched. The EVA revealed problems with the space suit. In spite of difficulties, the spacecraft returned to Earth three days after launch and splashed down in the ocean. This cover pays tribute to the US Navy Recovery Force that retrieved the craft from the ocean and brought the astronauts safely home.
