Cover Commemorates Thematic Day at 1992 Stamp Expo

The World Columbian Stamp Expo '92 was held in Chicago.  This cover features an official cachet authorized by the stamp exposition.  It pictures the three boats used during Christopher Columbus's voyage to the new world.  The postmark highlights the theme for May 31 - Thematic Day, a tribute to those who like to collect stamps based on a favorite theme.

The stamp included on this cover is US #2616, produced to promote the Expo.  It features a portion of the 15¢ pictorial design of 1869.  The original design for the 1869 stamp was taken from John Vanderlyn's painting "The Landing of Columbus," which hangs in the rotunda of the Capitol.
