In October 1962, Japan Airlines inaugurated a new Southern route to Europe. These overs were issued to commemroate this expansion. Dubbed the "New SIlk Road," this route traveled from Tokyo to London by way of the Middle East then through Europe, following the path of the ancient trade route it was named for. Some of the Airmail covers in this set flew from Tokyo to many of the stops along the way. Others were on the return flight.
