The anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter, October 24, 1945, has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. On April 25, 1945, delegates from 50 nations met in San Francisco for the United Nations Conference on International Organization.  On June 26, all 50 nations voted to accept the Charter.  The Charter then had to be approved by the governments of the five permanent members of the Security Council and a majority of the other nations that signed it.  The five permanent members of the Security Council are France, Great Britain, China, Russia and the United States.  The Charter went into effect on October 24, now celebrated every year as United Nations Day.
