 More About Rhodesia...

Rhodesia was a country in south Africa bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east.  Today, its territory makes up the country of Zimbabwe.

The first postal system in Rhodesia was established in 1888 by the British South Africa Company.  Mail was originally paid for with stamps of British Bechuanaland, with the first stamps printed in London in 1890.  However, it wasn't until 1892 that they were put to use.  The name "Rhodesia" was first included on the stamps in 1909.  On April 1, 1924, Southern Rhodesia issued its own stamps for the first time.  Then, in 1953, the country joined Nyasaland to become the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.  Rhodesia earned its independence in 1965 and continued issuing stamps until 1978, when it began the transition to Zimbabwe.  You'll enjoy discovering the 100 stamps in this collection today.
