More About Cocos Islands...

The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean.  It is an archipelago (chain of islands) approximately halfway between Australia and Sri Lanka, not too far from the Indonesian island of Sumatra.  The territory has periodically been known as either the Cocos Islands or Keeling Islands throughout history and consists of 27 coral islands, of which only two are inhabited.  The islands were discovered by British sea captain William Keeling in 1609.

The postage stamps of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands has been influenced by both Britain and Australia.  The first postal agency existed there from 1933 to 1937, then was permanently established in 1952.  The islands' first postage stamps were issued in June 1963, with Australian Post Office handling mail until 1979.  The islands had postal independence from 1979 to 1993, with Australia resuming administration of stamps and mail delivery from January 1994 onward.
