More About Macau...

Macau is officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (MSAR).  It's a city and special administrative region of the People's Republic of China located in the western Pearl River Delta bordered by the South China Sea.  It is one of the most desnely populated regions in the whole world.

Macau issued its first postage stamps in 1884 while it was a colony of Portugal.  After its 1910 revolution, the government overprinted older stamps with "REPUBLICA."  It was a formal Portuguese territory at this point and a number of interesting postage stamps were issued during this time.  In 1999, Macau was transfered to China as a special administrative region (much like Hong Kong) and stamps' overprints were changed to "MACAU, CHINA."  All this has given it an interesting postage stamp history you'll enjoy discovering.  Click here to get a general overview of that history.
