Amelia Earhart Disappears in Attempt to Circumnavigate the Globe
This sheet of four Palau stamps commemorates the 75th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance.
Earhart was an aviation pioneer. She received the Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She broke speed and altitude records and promoted aviation.
In 1937, Amelia Earhart attempted to be the first female pilot to fly around the world. On July 2, 1937, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, had flown 22,000 miles of their trip and 7,000 miles remained. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca lost radio contact with the plane after the last transmission at 8:43 am. Despite search efforts around the island on which they were supposed to land, the plane and its passengers were never found.
