Elvis Presley teamed up with director Gene Nelson for a second time in the swashbuckling film, Harum Scarum – the second movie Elvis made in 1965, and his 19th overall.  Elvis played Johnny Tyrone, a popular singer on a personal appearance tour in the made-up Persian-styled country Lunarkand. Johnny gets kidnapped and finds himself in the middle of a plot to kill the king.

Priscilla Presley wrote in her memoirs that Elvis was so excited about the role that he would wear the costumes and full make-up home after shooting.  Harum Scarum was produced with a low budget – Elvis cut his normal fee by 25%.  But it still had flashy sets and costumes.  Filming took just 18 days, and the movie used sets left over from the classic Cecil B. DeMille film, King of Kings.
