CZ160 – 1975 1¢ Gorgas Coil Stamp

Issued on February 14, 1975, the #CZ160 stamp is printed in coil form. It is perforated vertically.  Pictured on the stamp is Major General William Crawford Gorgas, United States Army physician. Many lives were lost to yellow fever and malaria before he came to the Panama Canal. As chief sanitary officer, he ordered ponds and swamps to be drained, fumigation of all remaining standing water, and purification of drinking water. Gorgas was awarded the Public Welfare Medal from the National Academy of Sciences for his work in the Canal Zone.  He later served as Canal Commissioner.
