About the Pony Express
From Missouri to California, the Pony Express could deliver mail faster than ever before. It was the thread that tied East to West before electronic communication was available. And although short-lived, the Pony Express has become a cornerstone in Wild West history.
The California Gold Rush called for high-speed mail delivery. By the thousands, people all over the country left friends and family to go make their fortune. To communicate with those back home, mail was sent by stagecoach. However, it felt like a lifetime when it was finally delivered weeks later. As the volume of mail grew, faster delivery was necessary.
On April 3, 1860, the Pony Express was born. For a pretty penny, mail could now be delivered within eight days. Throughout its 18-month existence, 35,000 pieces of mail were carried half a million miles across the American frontier.
