Stamp Set Highlights:
Ida B. Wells – The thirteenth stamp in the Black Heritage Series honors Ida B. Wells, who was born a slave in 1862. She devoted her entire life to educating people about the horrors of racial discrimination. In 1909, she helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Classic Films – This block of four stamps honors classic films from Hollywood’s golden era. The stamps resemble miniature movie posters with bright, glossy colors. Each of the four films featured received Academy Award nominations in 1940.
Marianne Moore – During her lifetime, poetess Marianne Moore was the recipient of the most distinguished literary awards the U.S. had to offer. She has been called the “first lady of poetry,” and won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. The stamp is the eighth in the Literary Arts series.
Indian Headdresses – These stamps are the first in the Folk Art Series to be issued as booklets. Headdresses, also called war bonnets, of the Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Comanche, Flathead, and Shoshone tribes are featured on the stamps. The headdresses were prized personal possessions, generally created by the warrior himself, and were usually buried with their owner at death. The headdresses were made from such materials as eagle and turkey feathers, beads, fur, hair tassels, and animal skins.
Micronesia/Marshall Islands – This joint issue by the U.S., Micronesia and the Marshall Islands commemorates the 1986 compact of free association. It granted political independence to the people of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. Each had been a U.S. trust since the end of World War II.
Creatures of the Sea – This block of four was a joint issue between the U.S Postal Service and the Soviet Union’s Ministry of Posts. The issue focused worldwide attention on marine mammals inhabiting the earth’s oceans. The historic issue is a shining example of the U.S. and the Soviet Union working together for the world’s common good. Featured are the dolphin, killer whale, northern sea lion, and sea otter.
America Issue – The second issue of the America Series celebrates natural world wonders. The U.S. issue pictures the Grand Canyon, not as it is today, but as it might have looked almost 500 years ago.
