Stamp HIghlights:

Douglas MacArthur (#1424) – Issued on the 91st birth anniversary of General Douglas MacArthur, this issue honors a great military hero who is remembered for his promise, “I shall return,” when he left Corregidor, the Philippines, in 1942.

John Sloan (#1433) – A student of American artist Thomas Eakins, John Sloan was renowned for his realistic portraits of everyday life.  The painting pictured on this stamp, “The Wake of the Ferry,” hangs in the Phillips Gallery, Washington, D.C.

United States in Space (#1434-35)– Decade of Achievement – 8¢:  These stamps were originally issued as an attached pair to coincide with the flight of Apollo XV and to mark the 10th anniversary of John Glenn’s Project Mercury flight, which sent the first man into orbit.

Blood Donors (#1425) –  Issued at a time when blood donations were not keeping up with demand, this stamp was meant to raise awareness of blood donor programs and increase needed donations.

Wildlife Conservation (#1427-30) – This block of four stamps was issued to raise awareness of the plight of endangered species.  The polar bear, the California Condor (one of the rarest birds in the world) and the alligator have all been threatened with extinction.  Increased water pollution has also put several species of trout in jeopardy.

San Juan (#1437) – This stamp commemorates the 450th anniversary of San Juan, Puerto Rico – the oldest continuously inhabited city in America.
