Own Limited-Edition Discovery STS-85 Silk Covers

Produced by Colorano, this set two covers honors the launch and return of the Space Shuttle Discovery’s 23rd mission, STS-85 (the 85th mission of the Space Shuttle program).

These popular Colorano covers feature “silk” cachets that are produced through a special screening process and then bonded to the envelope.  The cachets picture a pre-flight and in-flight crew photo from the mission and is surrounded by a golden border.  The covers bear patriotic US stamps and Kennedy Space Center cancellations marking the launch and return of the mission.  You can discover the story behind each one with the informative captions next to the cachets.

Launched on August 7, 1997, STS-85 carried the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere – Shuttle pallet-2 (CRISTA-SPAS-2).  This satellite was deployed and measured the characteristics of Earth’s middle atmosphere.  The satellite was retrieved during the same flight.  The Discovery landed on August 19, one day later than planned because of weather delays.
