#MA1820 – 1933 50c Century of Progress Issue #C18 Dispatched from Various Cities with Printed Cachet

1933 Century Of Progress Airmail Cover
Flown Aboard The Famous Graf Zeppelin

On October 2, 1933, one of history's favorite US stamps was issued in New York City – #C18, also known as the “Baby Zepp” due to the stamp's smaller denomination than the other Zeppelin issues.  #C18 celebrated the arrival of the famous Graf Zeppelin and covered the 50¢ postage rate for mail traveling aboard the enormous airship.  The Zeppelin made stops in Miami and Akron before finally arriving at the Chicago World's Fair on October 26.  At each stop, mail was collected and brought aboard the Zeppelin for the remainder of the journey.

In the end, only about 32,000 of #C18 were sold.  The remaining 90% of the Post Office Department's stock was destroyed, making #C18 scarce today in any condition, especially on a fine cover like this.  Your cover features the #C18 stamp with a cancel from one of the cities where the Zeppelin stopped and a printed cachet.  It’s a neat piece of history you’ll want to add to your collection.
