First Day City: There was no First Day of Issue Ceremony, but the First Day of Issue postmark was from Halifax, Pennsylvania, just one town in America that’s home to a barn with a flag painted on the side of it.
About the Flags on Barns set: Includes four stamp designs picturing pencil and watercolor illustrations of barns with large American flags painted on the side of them. The backgrounds represent different seasons. Original artwork by illustrator Stephanie Bower. They’re patriotic designs that represent the spirit of America.
History the stamp represents: Jeremiah Logemann started his website FlagsOverWisconsin.com mostly by accident. He saw a picture of a reclaimed wood flag in professional football player JJ Watts’s photograph on Instagram. He started collecting wood from farmers’ old barns until he got what he needed to recreate the flag.
Logemann never had formal carpentry training, but let his determination lead the way. He posted a picture of the flag online the night he finished it. By the next morning, he had received 10 orders. That inspiration has led Logemann on a journey from craftsman to artist.
He reclaims wood from forgotten barns that are being torn down. With the artwork, he also provides the history of the barn for his customers. He also provides the history of barns he’s reclaimed wood from on his website.
Branching out from his Wisconsin-based art, he helped State Line Distillery reclaim barn wood for their new tasting room. There are parts from the roof that make up the walls, the rafters make up the tables, and the floor trusses of the haymow (where hay is stored) make up the bar top, drink rail, and window sills. The farmer who’s barn the wood came from got to see his old barn get new life.
