Why the stamps were issued: For use on messages mailing to friends and loved ones.
About the stamp designs: Both stamps picture graphic illustrations of flowers inspired by European folk art. They show twisting vines, small flowers, and abstract heart shapes. The word “Love” is nestled among the flowers and vines. One stamp has a powder blue background, the other has a coral pink. Both are original artwork created by Bailey Sullivan.
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Romeo, Michigan. On Valentine’s Day each year, Romeo and Juliette, Georgia offer special dual postmarks as a nod to Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet.
About the Love Series: Based on the popularity of Christmas stamps, the USPS issued its first Love stamp in 1973. It wasn’t intended to be the start of a series, and, in fact, it wasn’t until 1982 that another Love stamp was issued. Love-themed stamps were issued sporadically over the next few years. The USPS stated that they weren’t intended just for Valentine’s Day mail, but also for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. In 1987, the USPS officially declared it a series, and new Love stamps have been issued nearly every year since. Love stamps are on sale longer than most commemorative stamps and are usually printed in greater quantities. They have sometimes been known to go back to press for additional printings if demand is sufficient.
History the stamp represents: If you’ve ever heard the saying “blood is thicker than water,” then you’ll know there’s nothing quite like the love of one’s family. And family is forever. But that doesn’t just mean those who are biologically related to us. It could be the friends we have chosen to surround ourselves with and who have proven themselves to stand by us through thick and thin.
Family love is about having someone to lean on through the tough times and someone to laugh with during the happy ones. Family are the people who love us no matter what we do or the mistakes we make. They stick by us and are our greatest cheerleaders. At the same time, they’ll let us know when we’re in the wrong, but won’t hesitate to forgive us.
Sometimes, family can be just mom and dad. Other times, it includes siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. It can also include college friends who have become like siblings to us. And, of course, we can’t forget those who marry into our family, like significant others, step-parents, and step-siblings.
While family means something different to everyone, there are some things that are the same all around. We all have people who love us and who we can always count on to be in our corner.
