When the USPS created a set of Message Monsters stamps in 2021, many speculated it was to attract younger people to the world of stamps. In addition to picturing four different monsters, the panes of 20 also included accessory stickers to decorate the stamps with. These included hearts, hats, voice balloons, flowers, and more.
Dressing up stamps before sending out your letter surely is fun, but why did the USPS choose monsters? Any parent or grandparent could guess the reason. Almost every child, at some point in their younger years, becomes fascinated with monsters. For some children, this means begging their parents to pretend to be a monster and chase them around the playground. For others, it means asking mom or dad to read the same friendly monster story before bed every night. Even the famed children's television show Sesame Street makes use of kids' love of monsters!
Whether a friendly monster or a scary monster, it's fun for children to play pretend with parents and friends. With the 2021 Message Monsters stamps, now they can play pretend with folks they might not get to see very often. After all, who wouldn't want to get a monster in the mail from a mischievous child they love?!
