About the Backyard Games set:  Includes eight designs picturing original artwork by Mick Wiggins of a different backyard game:  badminton, bocce, cornhole, croquet, flying disc, horseshoes, tetherball, and pick-up baseball.

History the stamp represents:  Baseball is our national pastime and almost every American knows the rules.  It’s a popular professional sport on television, but also a common backyard game among players of all ages.

One of the best things about baseball is that you don’t need formal equipment to play it.  Several informal varieties of the game have developed over the years, including stickball, wiffleball, and others.  But, as long as you have four objects to serve as bases, a ball or ball-like object, and a long narrow object to serve as a bat, you can play.

Wiffleball is considered by many to be the most common baseball variant today.  In fact many families set up a wiffleball field in their backyards for big events like family reunions or Fourth of July barbeques.  And the best part – all ages can play.  Grandma can be the umpire on the sidelines, grandpa can pitch, and the young children can learn how to hit the ball for the first time.  Of course, there’s always an overzealous uncle who hits the ball as hard as he can, but the sheer joy when someone finally tags him out is beyond compare.

Other games like football and soccer have risen in popularity over the years, but baseball has always stayed at the top of the list.  It’s a team sport that inspires cooperation and sportsmanship while building a special bond between family and friends.
