About the stamp design: Stamp pictures a hand-sketched and painted design by artist Gregory Manchess of a child building a sandcastle at the beach.

Special design details: The selvage of the pane of 20 includes a painting of trees along a bank with a body of water and a canoe with a man holding an oar.

First Day City: Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the First Day of Issue Ceremony was held virtually on the USPS’s Facebook and Twitter pages. The First Day of Issue Postmark was from Incline Valley, Nevada, located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe and known for its ample opportunities for outdoor activities.

About the Enjoy the Great Outdoors set: Issued to celebrate America’s natural beauty and the many ways we can get out and enjoy it. Five stamps picturing different hand-sketched and painted designs by artist Gregory Manchess. They picture building a sandcastle, hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and biking.

History the stamp represents: Who could forget all the joys of summer vacation as a child? No school, warm weather, plenty of time to spend with friends, and annual family vacations. And some of the best were trips to the beach.

The beach is irresistible to all ages. The sand is soft and nice to lay down on and relax. The water is cool when the sun gets too hot. And there can be fun natural treasures to find, like shells or rocks. But one of the most fun things about going to the beach is building a sand castle.

Every family has their own method for building a great sand castle. Some use plastic buckets as a mold, while others make intricate and unusual-looking castles by dripping very wet sand into piles. There are even some people who simply pile up sand and carve out the designs they want. Once the main build is constructed, many families search the shorelines for sticks and other decorations to complete their castles. Sometimes, it can be fun to split into teams and see which group makes the best castle.

Whether the beach you like best is on the ocean or your local lakeshore, family trips there are always memorable. Especially when everyone works together to build a sand castle. It’s one of the best things to do outdoors in the summer time.
