First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Freeport, Maine, at the L.L. Bean flagship store.

About the Holiday Wreaths set:  Includes four designs continuing the tradition of holiday-themed postage stamps, although it’s not technically part of the Traditional or Contemporary Christmas Series. Each of the four stamps pictures a different holiday wreath created by floral artist Laura Dowling and photographed by Kevin Allen. There is a wreath with aspidistra leaves folded to resemble ribbons, gilded pinecone and magnolia pod wreath with red ribbon, red and gold ribbon wreath with dried flowers, and woodland bush ivy wreath with red winterberries.

History the stamp represents:  When it comes to holiday decorations, few are more popular than the humble ribbon. These strips of fabric have been around for centuries and have adorned everything from gifts to garland and Christmas trees to wreaths. There is nothing a well-placed ribbon can’t spruce up.

Holiday wreaths are most commonly seen as evergreen boughs with a red ribbon. Sometimes other decorations are mixed in, too. But over the last several decades, the variety of different wreath designs has increased tremendously. In 2019, the USPS issued four new Forever stamps picturing some of the most unique designs.

One of the most striking wreaths pictured was red and gold with two wide ribbons woven through it. The wreath on its own would have been impressive enough, but the ribbons gave it an extra touch that made it even more beautiful. Two of the other 2019 Holiday Wreaths stamps also had ribbon elements. The rustic pine cone and magnolia pod wreath was dressed up with a red ribbon, and the solid green wreath featured leaves folded to resemble real ribbons.

These stamps are a celebration of the man decorating traditions we all look forward to during the holiday season. And those traditions would not be complete without including a ribbon or two!
