First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Freeport, Maine, at the L.L. Bean flagship store.

About the Holiday Wreaths set:  Includes four designs continuing the tradition of holiday-themed postage stamps, although it’s not technically part of the Traditional or Contemporary Christmas Series. Each of the four stamps pictures a different holiday wreath created by floral artist Laura Dowling and photographed by Kevin Allen. There is a wreath with aspidistra leaves folded to resemble ribbons, gilded pinecone and magnolia pod wreath with red ribbon, red and gold ribbon wreath with dried flowers, and woodland bush ivy wreath with red winterberries.

History the stamp represents:  Like evergreens, pine cones are a popular decoration during the holiday season. They can be found in baskets, laid out on the mantle, and even placed in holiday wreaths. Sometimes, they are dusted with white to resemble the snow outside. Other times they are covered with gold (gilded) to add extra pizzazz to another decoration. Some people even put out spiced pine cones that fill their home with a warm and comforting cinnamon scent.

Many people think pine cones are associated with the holiday season because of their connection to evergreens… But there is more to them than that. Since ancient times, pine cones have been considered symbols of enlightenment and spiritual awakening. They appear in ancient Egyptian artifacts, Roman ruins, and even within the Vatican. In fact, the top of the pope’s sacred staff features a pine cone. It’s amazing to think that such a small and unassuming object could be so ingrained in world culture.

In 2019, the United States Postal Service issued four different Holiday Wreath stamps, with one wreath being made almost entirely of gilded pine cones. It was the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season and acknowledge a cultural tradition carried on throughout history.
