About the stamp design:  Pictures Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.  The design was created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.  They created new art especially for use on the stamp.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, the city that’s home to the original Disneyland park.

About the Disney Villains set:  Includes 10 stamp designs picturing classic Disney villains:  Maleficent, Honest John, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, the Queen of Hearts, Lady Tremaine, Ursula, the Queen, Gaston, and Scar.  The selvage of the pane includes a larger image of the evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  The reverse side of the pane showcases drawings of the 10 characters and quotes by each one.  The designs were created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.  They created new art especially for use on the stamps.  According to the USPS, these stamps were created to celebrate “the rich legacy of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.”

History the stamp represents:  Some Disney villains are known for their Shakespearean personalities.  These characters, such as Gaston, are dramatic and over-the-top, making them especially memorable.

Gaston’s persistence and inherent rudeness make him the type of villain one could encounter anywhere.  This, combined with his narcissism and selfishness, puts the audience against him right away.  He is the perfect type of evil for Beauty and the Beast as he is handsome on the outside but wicked on the inside.  This is obvious in the first few minutes of the movie when he declares his love for Belle based solely on her beauty.  Critics applaud Disney for the parallels between Gaston and the Beast.  Both start out extremely arrogant and selfish, but only one has the potential to be good.

The final showdown between Gaston and the Beast proves how evil Gaston is.  Given the chance to leave unharmed after his defeat, Gaston lies and then stabs the Beast when his back is turned.  This is one of the few times a Disney villain actually harms one of the good characters.

In the end, the Beast redeemed himself by becoming a better person.  Gaston, however, was punished by falling to his death from the roof of the castle.  Proving once and for all who truly was the beast.
