Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate a famous Disney villain and the work put in by the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department to bring this character to life.
About the stamp design: Pictures the evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The design was created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department. They created new art especially for use on the stamp.
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, the city that’s home to the original Disneyland park.
About the Disney Villains set: Includes 10 stamp designs picturing classic Disney villains: Maleficent, Honest John, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, the Queen of Hearts, Lady Tremaine, Ursula, the Queen, Gaston, and Scar. The selvage of the pane includes a larger image of the evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The reverse side of the pane showcases drawings of the 10 characters and quotes by each one. The designs were created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department. They created new art especially for use on the stamps. According to the USPS, these stamps were created to celebrate “the rich legacy of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.”
History the stamp represents: Walt Disney Studios released their first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, in 1937. The movie not only began Disney’s famous line of princesses, but also its thrilling and memorable villains.
Taken from the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White, the queen is the driving force of the story. She is obsessed with being “the fairest one of all” and is enraged when her stepdaughter, Snow White, surpasses her. The queen’s jealousy leads her to send a huntsman to kill the princess. When he fails, the queen is forced to confront Snow White one-on-one. She uses dark magic to transform herself into a hideous hag and then creates a poison apple. The disguised queen tricks Snow White into taking a bite of the apple, but, the queen’s triumph is short-lived. As the princess falls to the ground, the sweven dwarfs arrive. They chase the queen up a cliff as a storm begins. Just as she is about to crush the dwarfs with a boulder, the rock she stands on is struck by lightning and she falls to her death.
While Snow White is the heroine, many critics cite the queen as the most interesting character. She changed what it meant to be a villain, proving they did not have to be ugly. Her powerful voice and commanding presence left a lasting impact and have made her one of the greatest villains of all time.
