History the stamp represents: With all the time he spent in the town, Andrew Wyeth had a big impact on Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. His paintings make up a big part of the Brandywine River Museum and he also inspired the two National Historic Landmarks to be established in Chadds Ford.

The Brandywine River Museum was established in 1971 by “Frolic” Weymouth. It was built next to Brandywine Creek and features works by artists who followed the Brandywine school of art – a style that originated in the late 1800s. Some of the most famous Brandywine artists are N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. The Brandywine art style began with Howard Pyle toward the beginning of the 20th century. Pyle taught many young artists his techniques, including Andrew Wyeth’s father, N.C. Pyle’s work later inspired Jamie Wyeth as well.

Along with the many paintings it has exhibited (like The Carry), Brandywine River Museum manages N.C. Wyeth House and Studio and the Kuerner Farm, both historic landmarks. Andrew Wyeth learned his craft at N.C. Wyeth House and Studio, while the Kuerner Farm was one of his favorite places to paint in Chadds Ford.

Thanks to the Brandywine River Museum, Andrew Wyeth’s works and childhood home have been preserved for the public to enjoy for years to come.
