About the Paintings by Andrew Wyeth set: Includes 12 stamps issued for the 100th birth anniversary of Andrew Wyeth. Designs picture the Andrew Wyeth paintings “Wind from the Sea” (1947), “Big Room” (1988), “Christina’s World” (1948), “Alvaro and Christina” (1968), “Frostbitten” (1962), “Sailor’s Valentine” (1985), “Soaring” (1942-1950), “North Light” (1984), “Spring Fed” (1967), “The Carry” (2003), “Young Bull” (1960), and “My Studio” (1974). The selvage of the pane of 12 pictures a black-and-white photograph of Andrew Wyeth from the 1930s.

History the stamp represents: The Wyeth family was full of talent. Of N.C. Wyeth’s five children, three became acclaimed artists, one was a composer, and the other an engineer. While Andrew is the most well-known of the Wyeth children, his sisters Henriette and Carolyn were successful artists, too.

Henriette Wyeth was the oldest of N.C. Wyeth’s children and showed early artistic talent. However, polio left her right hand weaker than her left. Not to be held back, Henriette learned to draw with her left hand and paint with her right. She went to the Normal Arts School in Boston (now MassArt) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her detailed and life-like portraits earned her high praise. Henriette is most famous for her painting of First Lady Pat Nixon.

Carolyn Wyeth was N.C. Wyeth’s second child and took over his house and studio after his death. She taught many young artists there for over 30 years (even tutoring Andrew’s son Jamie). Carolyn’s subjects of choice were still lifes or animals and she used mainly charcoal and oil paint.

While Andrew, Carolyn, and Henriette’s styles were different, they all painted the world of Chadds Ford (as evident in Andrew’s North Light and Carolyn’s N.C. Wyeth’s Barn). Their attention to detail earned the siblings legacies that continue to grow to this day.
