About the Paintings by Andrew Wyeth set: Includes 12 stamps issued for the 100th birth anniversary of Andrew Wyeth. Designs picture the Andrew Wyeth paintings “Wind from the Sea” (1947), “Big Room” (1988), “Christina’s World” (1948), “Alvaro and Christina” (1968), “Frostbitten” (1962), “Sailor’s Valentine” (1985), “Soaring” (1942-1950), “North Light” (1984), “Spring Fed” (1967), “The Carry” (2003), “Young Bull” (1960), and “My Studio” (1974). The selvage of the pane of 12 pictures a black-and-white photograph of Andrew Wyeth from the 1930s.

History the stamp represents: Jamie Wyeth is a third generation Wyeth artist, son of Andrew and grandson of N.C. He received an education from several members of his family, but developed a particularly close relationship with his father. Jamie sometimes even painted the same subjects as his father – like crows or ravens (as in Andrew’s Soaring and Jamie’s Saltwater Ice).

Like Andrew, Jamie spent much of his childhood at home. He went to school for six years and then asked to be taught from home so he could learn more about art. When Jamie was 12, he went to his aunt’s (Carolyn Wyeth) studio at N.C. Wyeth’s old home. From then on, Jamie split his time between learning from his father and his aunt.

While Andrew Wyeth favored tempera and watercolor, Jamie took an immediate liking to oil paint – his aunt and grandfather’s favored medium. While learning oil painting from Carolyn, Jamie also learned watercolor and tempera from his father.

Jamie Wyeth’s broad art education inspired him to include a wider variety of colors in his paintings than his father. As he studied, Jamie’s style came to resemble N.C.’s more than Andrew’s. However, until his father’s death, Jamie maintained that “Quite simply, Andrew Wyeth is my closest friend – and the painter whose work I most admire.”
