The selvage of the pane of 12 pictures a black-and-white photograph of Andrew Wyeth from the 1930s.

History the stamp represents: Andrew Wyeth was the youngest of N.C. Wyeth and Carolyn Bockius Wyeth’s five children. N.C. was an affectionate father and famous artist, encouraging each of his children to pursue their own talents. Three, including Andrew, followed in N.C.’s footsteps and became artists.

When Andrew was born on July 12, 1917, N.C. found it amusing and exciting that it fell on Henry David Thoreau’s 100th birthday – one of N.C.’s favorite writers. N.C. and Carolyn ensured close family ties between their children. Each one was allowed to pursue their own passions, but were still encouraged to spend time together.

When Andrew was young, he was often ill and spent a lot of time at home. It was there N.C. taught his son the fundamentals of drawing and watercolor painting as well as traditional school subjects like history and mathematics. When not working on his studies, Andrew often watched his father paint or went for walks and enjoyed nature with his brothers and sisters.

The time Andrew spent at home gave him many fond memories of its main room, shown in his painting Big Room. This room was the place the whole family would gather to celebrate holidays and was an important part of Andrew’s childhood.
