Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate the Workers Projects Administration (WPA) and its many accomplishments.
About the stamp design: Pictures the “See America, Welcome to Montana” WPA poster from the Prints & Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Designed by Maribel O. Gray in collaboration with art director Antonio Alcalá. The poster was created to support the ideas of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal programs.
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York.
About the WPA Posters set: Includes 10 different stamp designs picturing different WPA posters from the era of FDR’s New Deal. Issued to celebrate the Workers Projects Administration and its contributions to the economy and American culture.
History the stamps represent: By the late 1930s, America had largely lifted itself out of the Depression thanks to the Works Progress Administration (WPA). With more people earning a regular income, President Franklin Roosevelt established the Travel Bureau to encourage recreational trips to explore America’s natural beauty.
The Travel Bureau was initially called the Tourism Bureau when it was founded in 1937 as part of the National Park Service. Then in 1940, Roosevelt changed it to the US Travel Bureau and made it part of the Department of the Interior.
Roosevelt declared 1940 to be “Travel America Year” and allocated $75,000 (a small amount compared to other WPA programs) for its various projects. These included the “See America” poster series, exhibitions at the New York World’s Fair and Golden Gate International Exhibition, as well as a printed calendar of events and lecture series.
In 1940 alone, Americans spent more than ever on recreational travel – about $6 billion – which greatly helped the economy. The bureau was short-lived though, as the funds were needed for the war effort in 1942. But the bureau had long-lasting effects. It had launched a new age of increased outdoor recreation that would resume and prosper after the war.
