Finding no Christmas cards in his mailbox only worsens Charlie Brown’s depression over the holidays. “I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a holiday season to emphasize it?”
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Charlie has a wide circle of friends, including characters like Lucy, Linus, and Snoopy. Some have played major roles for several years, while others were phased out after a few appearances.
Violet Gray, the first character to join the original four Peanuts in 1951, is a stamp collector. Her best friend is Patty, who was the only female in early Peanuts strips. Charles Schulz described Patricia “Peppermint Patty” Reichardt as “the tomboy... forthright, doggedly loyal, with a devastating singleness of purpose, the part of us that goes through life with blinders on.”
Charlie Brown’s little sister Sally’s favorite pastimes are sitting in her beanbag chair watching television and following Linus around. Lucy and Linus’ little brother Rerun like to play cards with Snoopy. Charlie Brown is close friends with Schroeder, who loves classical music.
Many of these Peanuts characters took part in helping Charlie Brown find the true meaning of the holiday, making it “truly the merriest Christmas ever.”
Each of the Charlie Brown Christmas stamps features a still taken from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamps.

In addition to marking the 65th anniversary of the first Peanuts comic strip, these stamps marked the 50th anniversary of the first airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965. This set was the second issue to honor the Peanuts. The first came in 2007 (#3507) and pictured Snoopy atop his doghouse dressed as a World War I fighter ace.
These stamps were also issued for National Stamp Collecting Month and continued the long tradition of non-religious Christmas stamps. The very first U.S. Christmas stamp was issued in 1962.
