2014 49¢ Child Making Snow Angel
Winter Fun – ATM Booklet Stamp

Children can often be seen on wintery days lying flat in snow-blanketed yards. They swish their arms and legs back and forth, while catching snowflakes on their tongues. When they stand up, an angel silhouette is left impressed in the ground. Though a temporary masterpiece, snow angels can be created again and again with little trouble.

English artist Simon Beck has taken snow angels to the next level. Using only primitive tools and his feet, Beck creates intricate designs across snowy landscapes. He carefully walks out his designs, one step at a time.

Beck has taken 10 hours and walked almost 25 miles to create just one design. But the results are worth the effort. The patterns left in the snow appear to change throughout the day and from different angles, creating multiple works of art in one.

Sadly, like a snow angel, Beck’s art is only temporary. The hours of delicate work can easily vanish with a strong gust of wind or new snowfall, but Beck continues to create. He is sure to always photograph his work when it is completed, so the world can enjoy the art even after it is gone.

From simple snow angels to grand geometric murals impressed in the snow, people of all ages and talents can put their own artistic touches on a snow-covered landscape, if only for a moment.

The design on this stamp was hand-sketched by Jing Jing Tsong then digitally manipulated. The artist said she wanted to show “the magic of new snowfall and the joy of being in a moment that will melt away all too soon.”
