Flags of Our Nation, Set V: The Flags of Our Nation stamps issued in 2011 is the fifth group of the series. The stamps show historic state flags, as well as a âsnapshotâ image that shares some of each stateâs character.
Â
In the 1800s, America and Great Britain were poised for war over claims to the rich lands of the Northwest. Fur traders arrived by sea and settlers traveled the Oregon Trail to get to Oregon Country. In 1846, the Oregon Treaty brought the border dispute to an end and Oregon began the road to statehood. âThe Beaver Stateâ became the 33rd state of the Union in 1859.
Â
Oregon has the only state flag with different designs on each side. The flag face highlights Oregonâs history, and a gold shield in the center is filled with significant symbols. Mountains and oceans bathed in sunshine display the splendor of the area. The covered wagon is a reminder of hardy settlers who braved the Oregon Trail. Agriculture and mining, two of the stateâs vital industries, are represented by the plow and pickax. The majestic eagle, the thirty-three stars, and the words âThe Unionâ pay tribute to the U.S. The reverse of the flag pictures Oregonâs state animal, the beaver, which is known for its intelligence and engineering skill.
Â
Though not adopted until 1925, this flag is a fitting tribute to the beauty of Oregonâs land and the history of its people.
Â
Oregon Joins The Union
There was a large population of American Indians living in Oregon when the first Europeans arrived. These tribes included the Chinook, Clackama, Kalapuya, Multnomah, Tillamook, Bannock, Cayuse, Paiute, Umatilla (a major band of the Nez Perce), Klamath, and Rogue.
