Of all the extraordinary characters featured on the 2007 Comic Super Hero stamps, Sub-Mariner was the earliest to appear. The half-merman and half-human creature came on the scene in 1939 in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly.
Next to arrive, Captain America began challenging the threat of Nazi Germany in 1941. Captain America gained his powers after exposure to radiation, like the Thing, Spider-Man, and Hulk. Those figures arrived in the 1960s, along with Iron Man and the Silver Surfer. Wolverine and Spider-Woman followed in the seventies, and Elektra appeared in 1981.
These super heroes are all tragic figures who lost family and other loved ones. In the stories of their early lives, half of them were frail, small, scrawny, shy, or bookish. Their transformations, however, through radiation, venom, or serum, made them extremely strong, fast, agile, and invincible.
Even though these characters are supernatural, they are subject to the very human emotions of jealousy, anger, depression, hate, and love. Essentially lonely, they sometimes team up with one another to vanquish a villain. Sometimes, though, their blind emotions lead them to become villains themselves.
