Construction on the mountain began on October 4, 1927.  Sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his team of 400 workers sculpted the 60-foot carvings, which peak at 5,725 feet above sea level.  The sculptures were completed on October 31, 1941.  Since then, a Presidential Trail, Visitor Center, and Museum have been added to the mountain.

2008 $16.50 Hoover Dam, Express Mail
The Boulder Dam Project (it was planned to be located in Boulder Canyon, but was later moved down the river to Black Canyon) was organized to construct a dam to keep silt and sediment out of the Colorado River.  Construction on the dam began on April 29, 1931, and was completed on March 1, 1936, more than two years early.  The dam cost $49 million dollars to build and is 726.4 feet high, the second-highest dam in the U.S.  At the time of its construction, it was the world’s largest electric power-producing facility and largest concrete structure.  In 1931, it was named “Hoover Dam,” after Herbert Hoover, who was one of the dam’s early supporters.
