A new version of the 1996 Yellow Rose stamp was issued in 1997. The back of the pane of the previous Yellow Rose stamp had contained a message concerning the Stamps etc. mail order catalog and a salute to the 108th Tournament of Roses Parade and 83rd Rose Bowl Game. On the newer version, this space is dedicated to the "Stampers" program, designed to interest youths in stamp collecting. "USPS 1997" is microprinted on the small stem of the 1997 rose.
