As the state bird of New York and Missouri, the bluebird made an appearance on two of the 1982 State Birds and Flowers stamps. At one time, this symbol of hope and springtime was commonly found from southeastern Canada to mid-Texas. With the destruction of its natural habitat of woodlands, fields, and orchards, however, it is relatively rare. In 1996, this stamp was reprinted. This reprinted version differed from the original stamp in several ways; the new stamp utilizes a cent sign (¢) and also bears the year date 1995 in the lower-left margin.
