Why the stamp was issued: This stamp was the 1992 Traditional Christmas stamp.

About the stamp design: The 15th-century painting Madonna and Child with Saints, by Italian artist Bellini, was the basis for this stamp. Bradbury Thompson, who has worked on previous Traditional Christmas stamps, cropped the original painting to show the head and shoulders of Mary and Jesus. This was the first time a Traditional Christmas stamp featured a 29¢ denomination. The previous year, the US Postal Service was not sure if the rate would increase, so the stamps were nondenominated. The rate remained the same in 1992, so the denomination was added.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue ceremony took place at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The painting is house at the museum.

History the stamp represents: The Christmas stamp was based on the painting, Madonna and Child With Saints, by Giovanni Bellini. A member of the Bellini family of painters during the Italian Renaissance, he helped develop a type of painting known as sacra conversazione (holy conversation), featuring the Madonna and Child in an interior setting with two or more saints. In the original painting, two figures, a male and a female, are with the Madonna and Child. The painting is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art.
