Reason the stamp was issued: This stamp was issued in celebration of 100 years of the National Association of Letter Carriers. The NALC is one of the largest postal unions in the US.
About the stamp design: The stamp pictures an illustration of three letter carriers by Jack Davis, "the undisputed king of commercial caricature artists." The Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee requested the design include at least one African American letter carrier as well as a variety of attire. This was intended as a nod to the motto: "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." The stamp design was created using Davis's watercolor and India ink illustration. The slogan "Letter Carriers: We Deliver!" was added to the design to complement the USPS's "We Deliver" advertising campaign.

History the stamp represents:. The NALC was formed in 1889 after many years of postal workers suffering through poor working conditions, long hours, and no vacation time. Despite backlash from employers (including loss of a job in some cases), membership in the organization grew steadily. In 1893, the union won a major Supreme Court victory. The court found that letter carriers were owed $3.5 million in unpaid overtime (equal to approximately $6.03 billion in today's wages).
