On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made history as the first African American player in Major League Baseball.  His debut that day with the Brooklyn Dodgers broke the color line and ended decades of segregation in the sport.  Robinson earned respect as a baseball player because of his talents as a fielder, batter, and daring base runner.  His integrity and determination earned him admiration off the field.

Robinson’s career was full of great moments. One of his outstanding years was 1949, when he batted .342, scored 122 runs, and hit home 124 more. He was the National League’s Most Valuable Player that year. In 1962, Robinson was selected to the Hall of Fame.

This commemorative 90% silver proof coin features a dramatic recreation of Robinson stealing home plate (as he did during the 1955 World Series) on the front.  The back pictures the Jackie Robinson Foundations 50th anniversary logo with the inscription “Rookie of the Year 1947 • Hall of Fame 1962.”  Surcharges from the sale of this coin went to the Jackie Robinson Foundation for educational programs and scholarships.

What’s a proof coin?  Proofs are the finest coins produced by the US Mint.  The proof blanks are specially treated and hand-polished and cleaned so the images are struck perfectly.  They’re also struck at least twice, which results in a frosted and highly-detailed design and mirror-like background.  You’ll want to see this coin in-person to appreciate all the fine details.  It’ll make a great addition to your coin or sports collection – order now.
