This U.S. Navy Bicentennial medal was authorized by Congress and produced by the U.S. Mint. The three-inch bronze medal is scarce and collectable. Three-dimensional engraving means every detail is easy to see.
The U.S. Navy began on October 13, 1775. Since that time it has been defending the nation’s borders and battling fro freedom across the world. The medal was minted in 1975. The obverse (heads) shows warships used by the Navy and includes the phrase “In Defense of Rights and Liberties.” The reverse (tails) pictures the Navy emblem (an American eagle holding an anchor), a sailing ship, and the words “Birth of the U.S. Navy” and “October 13, 1775.”
