The Louisiana Purchase / Peace Medal Nickel commemorates the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark Expeditions. This coin is the first of four coins in the Westward Journey Nickel Series minted between 2004 and 2005.

The obverse side bears the classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson that has been used on the nickel since 1938. On the reverse is a depiction of two hands reaching out clasped together. One hand with a military uniform, symbolizing the American Government. The other with a silver band, beads, and an American eagle, representing the Native American community.

The reverse pays tribute to the original Jefferson Peace Medal designed in 1801, and was presented to Native American leaders as a token of goodwill during treaty signings.
