During the Revolutionary War, Blount was appointed paymaster of a North Carolina regiment and helped in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina. He was also a delegate to the Continental Congress and, later, the Constitutional Convention.
As a member of North Carolina’s House of Commons, Blount supported expansion across the Appalachian Mountains into present-day Tennessee. In 1790, he was appointed governor of the new territory by President Washington. When Tennessee became a state, he was appointed to represent the new state in the US Senate.
