Includes America’s First Mourning Stamp

Here’s your chance to own four mint stamps issued during the Civil War.  They were produced to address complaints about stamps released the previous year and to cover a new postal rate.

The 5¢ Jefferson stamps (#75 and #76) had been printed in buff in the new Series of 1861-62.  After collectors complained that cancels showed to prominently on the light color, it was change to Red Brown (#75) and Brown (#76).

The 24¢ Washington stamp underwent a similar color change from the previous year’s stamps.  Where the 1861 stamp was red lilac, this stamp (#78) was printed in Lilac.

The 15¢ Lincoln stamp (#77) was the first presidential “mourning” stamp.  Issued one year after Lincoln’s assassination, it was also the first 15c US stamp, paying the single rate to France.
