1993 Endangered Species First Day Cover
UN Offices in New York

The stamps on this First Day Cover began a multi-year series to focus attention on the dire plight of many of Earth’s species. New York, Geneva, and Vienna will each feature four different species per year. Many fauna and flora are threatened by the destruction of habitats from population growth and environmental pollution or by unrestricted exploitation. A Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species was drafted in 1973 and became international law in 1975. The U.N. monitors the provisions of the Convention that prohibits or regulates trade in endangered species.

American artist Norman Adams illustrated New York’s selection of the Queensland (Australian) hairy-nosed wombat, the American whooping crane, the giant clam of the Indian and Pacific oceans, and the giant sable antelope of Africa.

Fleetwood began producing covers in 1941. Mystic bought the company in 2007 and is proud to continue its tradition of excellence today. All Fleetwood First Day Covers issued after March 10, 1976, feature interesting information about the stamp subject on the back. These covers are cancelled with either a "killer bar" (a heavy black four-bar cancel) or a black and white pictorial, if offered.
