1993 Aging – Dignity
UN Offices in New York

The stamp on this First Day Cover highlights the Vienna International Plan of Action of Aging, adopted by the General Assembly in 1982. Today, greater numbers of people are reaching old age; thus, as a portion of the total population, this group is the largest it has ever been, Medical, social, political, and economic structures are enormously stretched by the needs of the elderly, and traditional family support systems are severely stressed or lacking. Dependent elders lose their self-esteem and dignity, and younger generations increasingly perceive them as burdens. The Vienna Plan was formulated on the belief that the best solution lies in delaying the start of dependency.

The New York stamp features a family surrounding their older loved ones. Family contact and participation help older people retain their self-worth. Health and nutrition help them maintain mental alertness and independence – ingredients for quality interaction.

Fleetwood began producing covers in 1941. Mystic bought the company in 2007 and is proud to continue its tradition of excellence today. All Fleetwood First Day Covers issued after March 10, 1976, feature interesting information about the stamp subject on the back. These covers are cancelled with either a "killer bar" (a heavy black four-bar cancel) or a black and white pictorial, if offered.
