George Washingtons 200th birth anniversary was commemorated with a series of 12 stamps. This stamp was based on a painting by William Joseph Williams, which showed Washington wearing the full dress of the Masonic Lodge to which he belonged. The stamp shows Washington looking older than in most portraits. The Post Office Department had the Masonic symbolism removed from the design, but kept Washingtons likeness.
