# 594 - 1923 1c Franklin, green
One of The Most Highly Prized U.S. Stamps of the 20th Century…”
Gary Griffith – writer and expert on the stamps of 1922-26
Less than 130 US #594 are known to exist in any condition… that’s why I’m thrilled to offer you what is likely a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get this rarity for your own. You’ll be one of the few lucky collectors with the privilege of sharing in this stamp’s history – 100 years after its issue.
One of the greatest rarities in US postal history nearly went undiscovered
Here’s the story behind the stamp…
The elusive #594 began life on a rotary press, destined to be a perforated 10 coil (#597). But… a small quantity of unperforated sheet ends was left over from production of the #597, already imprinted with the familiar image of Ben Franklin. To save money, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing had been using leftover sheets like these to create other stamps. And so it was with #594 – the leftovers snapped up to complete the order for 1c Franklin stamps by perforating them 11x11. It’s estimated just 51,000 stamps were produced in this manner – a tiny quantity of this “coil waste” stamp – all sent out with the regular order of 1c stamps.
Since the BEP didn’t consider the perforation differences significant, the new variety wasn’t announced. It went unnoticed – and unsaved – until two years after the event, when a collector announced he’d had a copy of this variety for about a year! Lucky for us this collector spoke up. And now you can be part of this intriguing philatelic story.
Now you can own one of the scarcest stamps of the last century
With its great age, it’s not surprising this treasure has one or two small imperfections. They don’t detract from its collectability and extraordinary story, but do save you thousands of dollars off the regular price. And your stamp comes with a copy of the its 1993 Philatelic Foundation Certificate.
