Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate the beauty of autumn in the United States.

About the stamp design: Pictures a photograph by nature and garden photographer Allen Rokach (1941-2021).

Special design details: Rokach was known for using what he dubbed the “Rokach effect,” to give his photographs an impressionistic quality. This sometimes adds interesting and unusual colors to the landscape shown.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Great American Stamp Show in Hartford, Connecticut.

About the Autumn Colors set: Includes 10 different designs featuring photographs by nature and garden photographer Allen Rokach (1941-2021). Each photograph was taken at a different location across the United States, a perfect way to emphasize the nationwide beauty of autumn.

History the stamp represents: Many people take their vacations in the summer when the weather is hot and the trees are green. However, autumn can be just as wonderful a time to travel. Acadia National Park in northern Maine includes 50,000 acres of coastal mountains and forests. Peak autumn colors can be enjoyed by car along the Acadia All-American Road or by taking a hike on one of the park’s many nature trails. Enjoy views of the Atlantic ocean, too.

A few hundred miles southwest, you’ll find the Berkshires in Massachusetts. The tree-covered mountains put on quite the spectacle come the end of September to mid-October. The largest peak in the range is Mount Greylock (3,500 feet), and hiking to its summit provides one of the most breathtaking views in the entire region. Along with the foliage, the Berkshires are known for their support of the arts. Entertainment opportunities abound, as well as many unique restaurants.
