History the stamp represents: Throughout history, different symbols have been used to represent peace. These universal emblems can communicate this important ideal across language barriers without words.
One of the oldest symbols of peace is the olive branch. It has been used for this purpose since the fifth century BC. The Greeks associated olive branches with their goddess of peace, Eirene. They also believed the branches kept evil spirits away. The olive branch has continued to represent peace in art and on currency. In fact, the olive branch is included in the emblem of the United Nations and the Great Seal of the United States.
Another symbol of peace is the dove. Its use dates back to the days of early Christianity. Initially connected to baptism and inner peace, by the third century AD, it was increasingly associated with social peace. Fifth-century philosopher Augustine of Hippo noted that “perpetual peace is indicated by the olive branch, which the dove brought with it when it returned to the ark” after the great flood described in the Bible.
Yet another well-known symbol is the “peace sign” developed in 1958 for Britain’s nuclear disarmament campaign. The symbol is based on the flag signals for “N” and “D.” it was soon adopted by the Student Peace Union and before long, became a new universal symbol of peace recognized worldwide.
