History the stamp represents: It has been estimated that up to 150,000 words in the English language were taken from Ancient Greek. That amounts to about 30% of the English language! Among the words we’ve taken directly from the Greek language is “kudos.”

To the ancient Greeks, kudos meant “That which is heard of,” and was used to acknowledge glory, fame, and honor. Greek myths told tales of kudos being given to the brave warriors and heroes who claimed victory on the battlefield. For example, famed poet Homer referenced kudos in the Iliad, as an honor awarded by the gods for triumph in battle.

By the late 1700s, kudos was heard around English-speaking universities, where Greek was frequently taught. It was first recognized as an English word in 1831, used as a noun to bestow praise or acclaim. It gained prominence through literature and by the early 1900s, kudos was part of our national vocabulary.

Around the 1940s, “kudo” in the singular form became common, but, in Greek, kudos is already singular. Grammar experts consider this a back formation – the creation of a new word from the misunderstanding of an existing word. Several common words we use today were created in this way. It is considered acceptable to use the singular version. So however you use it, kudos, or kudo, to you!
